The Fenton Boys Varsity Cross Country Team got off to a flying start on Friday, August 19th, at Huron Meadows Metropark in Brighton. While the meet was unscored, the Tiger Harriers would have taken any team competition in dominating fashion, placing all 5 of their runners among the top 13 places of the 19-team meet, as well as 9 within the top 47.
Fenton was led by a sterling race from Sophomore Adam Jesse, who overcame a 20 second early deficit a half mile into the race to not only rejoin the lead pack, but use a long kick to secure his first high school 5k XC victory. His time of 17:01 equaled his personal best. Senior Captain Mitch Chabot followed Jesse with a solid 17:41 effort, claiming 9th place and leading a pack of 5 Tigers that finished within 21 seconds of each other. Junior Nolan Day followed Chabot into the chute in 10th with a time of 17:47, Sophomore Ben Sheffield posted a 1 minute, 47 second PR to claim 11th in 17:50, Senior Captain Peter Kennings ran 17:55 for 13th, and Freshman Sam Cox came in 6th for the Tigers, 17th overall in 18:02.
Logan Canada, Alex Ludwig, Brian Casey, Micah Dekraker, and Gage Bond made it 11 Tigers under 20 minutes on the day.
Arguably their strongest season debut, this marked the first occasion the Fenton Squad was able to put 5 runners under 18 minutes in the season’s first race.
